CODY- The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking information on five mule deer that were shot and left to waste along the Chief Joseph Highway northwest of Cody last weekend.

Powell Game Warden Chris Queen said that a concerned citizen first reported the incident after driving by and spotting a dead buck from the road.

Upon investigation, Queen found five dead mule deer in or near the right-of-way of Highway 296, approximately six miles west of the junction with Highway 120. “A three point buck, three does and one fawn were found shot and left to waste within a mile of each other along the highway,” Queen said. “The deer were likely shot Saturday evening, Oct. 29 or early the next morning. By the time they were found, the meat was spoiled and not salvageable.”

“The deer were likely shot from the road by someone driving by,” Queen said. “This act shows a blatant disregard and disrespect for wildlife.”

Anyone with information on this wildlife violation is encouraged to call the Stop Poaching Hotline at (877) WGFD-TIP, report the information online at wgfd.wyo.gov or in a text message to TIP411 (using keyword WGFD), or by calling Game Warden Chris Queen directly at (307) 899-3124. Reporters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward up to $5,000 if the information leads to a conviction.
