Tie Hack Reservoir and Dam was built in 1997 to provide water storage for the city of Buffalo. The name "Tie Hack" refers to the days when the transcontinental railroad was being constructed. Railroad ties were made from trees hacked and cut by hand....hence the name "tie hack." Getting there:
Follow U.S. 16 west from Buffalo for about
15 miles to USDA Forest Service Road 21. Follow signs to the
campground and lake. A weather-dependant road closure
is in effect from March 1 to as late as June 20. Contact the
Buffalo USDA Forest Service office for exact dates.
