Named after the geological feature termed Pilot Butte just north of the water, the reservoir was formed when the Pilot Butte earthen dam was constructed in 1926 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, with a height of 64 feet, and a length of 55 feet at its crest. Water comes to Pilot Butte from the Wind River Diversion Dam through the Wyoming Canal.
