Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area was established October 1, 1968 by an act of Congress. The reservoir was created in 1964 with the damming of the Green River. There are 207,363 acres of land and water within the area divided between Wyoming and Utah. Flaming Gorge received its name from John Wesley Powell during his 1869 expedition down the Green River.
From Rock Springs
Take 1191 south (I-80 Cruel Jacks exit just west of town)
From Green River
Take Highway 530 south. There are many dirt roads to ge to the lake.
From Vernal, Utah, take U.S. Highway 191 north for 43 miles.
