Located on the western edge of the Black Hills, the area was occupied by the Sioux tribes until the great Black Hills gold rush in 1874. Conflicts arose with the Native Americans resuilting in the Sioux losing control of the area. Keyhole Dam, an earthfill structure, was completed by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1952.
