Big Pattern Change

We've been inundated the past week. Huge rainfalls in many parts of the state. Creeks and rivers running full, lakes full to over full. Cold water running into the warm water.
This is going to make big changes to the fishing patterns. I'm curious how you plan to adapt, what you think will have to be done differently - from the normal late summer to early fall transition period.

For flooded lakes, unless truly frigid, I ply tight to the shore, as flooded land dumps all kinds of food into the water. Flooded waters are often stained, so my flies are typically dark, larger than normal. My thoughts are to make it easier for the fish to find their mark. I also, tend to slow down a bit, waiting longer between strips.

Here in Colorado,its just the opposite right now.We are facing a huge drought,lakes are low,this springs run-off was a very poor run-off and unless we have a wet winter . . .we could be hurting come summer next yr.

Agree with Fyyrodn. Dark lures or the other extreme. Wild neon. Fish will be tight to shore and in fast moving water, tight to current breaks. And scent wont hurt either. To take the advice of our local fishing show host. And an FXR contributor. I would be giving some thought to a 4 " Gulp minnow in the Firetiger pattern. Tossed real tight to structure, slow twiched back. If the water temps take a big hit, and get cold real fast. That's a good time to hang around the house IMO.

I live on the edge of the Brazos River. I walk out my front door and into the river and - boom - I am fishing just like that. For me the river is fascinating. The mile long stretch I fish is a microcosm of the river, I have it all in that one mile. Trying to figure out where the fish are, what they are doing, why they are doing it, what they are biting, if they are biting - this is what keeps me in the river casting flys. I fly fish almost exclusively. It isn’t that I am a fly fishing snob, it’s that fly fishing works – it’s effective - and it has added benefits. I carry all my tackle in a vest, no tackle box needs to be dragged along. The casting itself is fun, even when I don’t catch fish I’ve enjoyed the experience of casting. Fly rods enhance the experience of bringing fish in. I like the hands on the line feel instead of the feel of line spooling up on a reel and muted down through a gear and crank system. Fish fight better and feel better on a fly rod. Fly fishing just feels better to me than other methods.
