I just got back from a two-and-a-half-week trip in Michigan. We usually do a week on the east side with Lindsay’s family and a week on the west side with mine. Her dad Paul has runabout type boat and isn’t a big angler himself but will always oblige taking me out in the morning before the rest of the family joins for some fun in the sun. This year I took my fly rod. With Paul, we seem to have developed a tradition of some breakfast beers and cigars and small fish. It's a good tradition.
I’m working remotely most for these days so it’s not like I can go out during the day and go fishing. And of course, the evenings are saved for spending times with old friends and family. I know that this east side stuff could be good if I could find the water, I keep hearing that the Huron River is supposed to have some good
carp water. I was really looking forward to the week on the west side with my dad and cousins.
Fishing with my dad is the old school fun stuff. 14-foot aluminum boat on small waters catching big
bluegills and small
largemouth, tons of fun, just like when I was a kid. We got to do this a couple times and it was crazy fun. I still love it out here and stalking carp, but dunking worms next to lily pads and jigging up crappie is something I still love and look forward to do this with my boys.
I was also really looking forward to going fishing with my cousins. They knew I liked carp fishing and they knew where we could find some. This is in the Kalamazoo River area around Otsego and Allegan. We started off at a small impoundment that was weeded up so we switched to Lake Allegan. We found them. Had an amazing day. We didn’t have anything to pole with, but with three of us someone could always just walk the boat.
It just reminded me how much I like fishing with family. It’s a different type of enjoyment and ribbing from your buddies. It reminds you of how you came up. So be sure to take your family out fishing if you can. It’s fun.
