FLIPPIN, ARK. (April 21, 2016) Over his nine-year career on the Walmart FLW Tour, Ranger Pro Scott Canterbury has brushed greatness with a litany of second-place finishes. The angler proved his mettle and beat the field with a four-day total of 62 pounds, 7 ounces to win last week's annual Beaver Lake event.
Out of the numerous close calls over his career, the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup was particularly heart breaking with Canterbury losing by one ounce and missing out on the $500,000 first-place prize. Canterbury didn't let the close calls deter him from giving it his all on Beaver Lake.
"This feels awesome," said Canterbury. "This is what I've always wanted. I mean the money is great, but that trophy, I'll always have that. I'll spend the money but I'll have the trophy forever."
While most anglers optioned to fish the dirty waters of the south end of the lake, Canterbury spent the majority of his time working in White River portion of the lake.
"I fished down there on the first day but I'm more comfortable where I've fished the past six, seven or eight years we've been here," said Canterbury. "And that's up that river where I know pretty much every inch of it."
Canterbury pitched a combination of Dirty Jigs and NetBait Paca baits to staging areas, including outcroppings, ledges and shelves.
"The first two days, the fish were down deeper in that five- to eight-foot zone," said Canterbury. "That's when the compact pitching jig was best. But the last two days they seemed to have moved up shallower on the laydowns and on little ledges and shelves in the rock to bed. I really think it turned into a full-blown spawn - and that's when the bulkier flipping jig seemed to be better."
Canterbury's winnings included a check for $100,000 and an additional $25,000 for the Ranger Cup bonus.
"It takes a lot of things to come together to win one of these events," said Canterbury. "One thing I never have to worry about is boat performance. My Ranger boat is one of the many keys to my success. Without it, I wouldn't be able to run and fish as hard as I do."
