I've caught bigger ones, caught them up to 12 inches in the river, but this fella was fat, and a fat fish is a rare thing in the river. The current has been slow for a good while and the river is just bursting with food, so I can see why.
This is a 10.5 inch bluegill, a fat one. For a moment I thought I'd caught a crappie. I'll take these all day long. For a sense of scale the reel is 2.5 inches in diameter.
Nice fish. As another reference most fly rod handle and reel seats together measure about 10 inches. I typically use that as a gauge to measure my fish and in others pictures to add a bit of realism to their guestimates of length.
Mine is 10.5 inches from but to tip of the cork, measured it a long time ago to check fish with. Recently I began carrying a cloth tape measure and checked this bluegill. I didn't think to check his girth, but he was a fatty.
