Sand Bass

On a local reservoir I've been chasing sand bass aka white bass, boils. They've been pushing bait hard, but a bit different then I'm used to. Rather than an area erupting and the bait trying to escape while being hit from below, we're seeing "waves" as the bait skitters along the surface with the white bass in hot pursuit. It's all my trolling motor can do to catch up to them

Great fun when we do get within casting range with a fly rod. About any streamer in the 2-3 inch range will get eaten when they're pushing bait.

I've never really fished for sand bass when they were running. I understand they love shad, and that shad travel in tight schools.

When they're running, which I equate to spawn in the spring, that's another time you can have non-stop action. They feed just as aggressively when spawning as other times. These guys are feeding machines.

When they're pushing bait (or boiling) it's a fresh water version of chasing the birds/boils on the salt. Occasionally, we have the birds join in the melee at Boyd also. Although, the birds haven't picked up on the action yet which is unusual.

Meeting the kids and grandkids for dinner tomorrow and chasing the boils again. At least I hope the fish are active. Alexandria will get a kick out of that if they are. May even be able to hook her up with one.

Any chance of some video? That would be cool to see.

Sandies chasing bait is the closest thing to chasing birds in the salt. Great fun.

I don't have a video camera. I'll see if I can't get a few still tonight.
