Lake Fork Fishing Tournament Article is Up

Blog by: David Coulson , CO 6/12/2014 (Return to blogs)

Back in January of this year, Lloyd Tackitt, Texas State Editor, posted a blog asking who was going fish the “5th Annual World Championship Bass On The Fly Fishing Tournament” to be held on Lake Fork Reservoir, Texas the end of May.  Reading his blog my mind went, uhm, bass tournament, fly fishing, what’s not to like, I need to do this.

I responded to the blog, and then gave Lloyd a phone call and confirmed I planned on fishing the tournament, and thought it might be a good idea if we fished it as a team, Team Fish Explorer so to speak.  We talked about doing a series of blogs on the tournament, and somehow that never quite worked out.  But what did work out was us meeting up at Lake Fork and fishing the tournament as a team.

Fishing the tournament with Lloyd also allowed me to achieve one of my goals for this year, and that is to fish with all the state editors.  Jeff, Hunter, and Mike I’ll try to work out something before too long to fish with you.

During pre-fish, Lloyd commented that we ought to co-author an article about our experiences during the tournament.  I agreed, Lloyd took the lead and a couple days after the tournament sent me his first draft.  I added my input and after a couple of revisions it was good to go.  I’ve managed to get it up today.

Now that’s the cat’s out of the bag, so to speak, I’m sure that Lloyd will have plenty to add, as I may also, about a few of the side experiences and even add a bit more detail to a couple of the events.

Since the tournament, I’ve had several members ask me what’s Lloyd like.  In my opinion, he’s one down to earth Texan.  While I suspected that would be the case before I meant him based on his writings and our correspondence through e-mail and phone calls, it was confirmed after we met.  You’ll not meet a more down-to-earth and unpretentious individual.  While an avid fly fisher, angler in general actually, he sure doesn’t fit the “image.”  But then when I first saw him that Friday morning leaning against his small economy car, he didn’t fill the Texan bill either.  Based on the other Texas vehicles at the marina, he should have been driving a truck large enough to hold his car in the bed.  Yep, one thing is for sure, Lloyd’s his own man.

And after two days fishing with Lloyd, I was sorry it was over.  Primarily, because fishing with Lloyd was a blast, and I can’t wait until we’re able to fish together again.  If you ever get the opportunity to fish with Lloyd, DO NOT PASS IT UP.   I look forward to the next time I can fish with Lloyd.

Enjoy the article.

Ah, one final note, team Fish Explorer place third in the boating division.

We had a blast and let me say that if you get a chance to fish with Dave DO NOT PASS IT UP - and bring your sense of humor. Not only was it a blast but how cool is it to say we placed in the "WORLD" Bass on the Fly Fishing Tournament? I wonder if I should put that on my resume...

About the Author

To say fly fishing is a passion for Dave is an understatement, he lives by the adage, fly fishing isnt a matter of life or death, its much more important than that. Simply, if its a fish, then Daves willing to chase it on a fly. This includes making two or three trips a year out of state to places like Alaska, Canada, East and West Coasts to fly fish for salmon, northern pike and salt water species, such as redfish. The rest of the time Dave spends his time plying Colorado waters with a fly rod for everything the state has to offer such as bass, perch, crappie, bluegill, walleye, catfish, pike and yes even trout with a fly.
