Highlight of recent trip to Montana was hooking five species of fish in one river

Montana. Big Sky Country. Fabled trout waters.

My destination was Kalispell. Kalispell is tucked a long way from anywhere in the northwestern corner of Montana. The Canadian border is less than 100 miles away.

But distant does not mean deserted.

Kalispell is similar to western Colorado in many ways. Somewhat like Grand Junction being a low elevation gateway to mountains and forests, Kalispell is the southern jumping off place for Glacier National Park, which extends to Canada and generates a heavy influx of tourists into Kalispell. Also like a number of western Colorado towns, Kalispell sits in the flat of an agricultural mountain valley with mountains all around.
