Fish: Peacock Bass

best lures for peacock bass

This summer I'll be in south Florida giving the peacocks a shot in the canals, for the 1st time (just C&R). I realize there are often those special lures that you don't want to share & I respect that. On the other hand, many protect the spot & don't mind sharing the lure. For those interested in the discussion, what's your favorite peacock lure and why?

Peacock bass often hit surface bait hard. Work the bait in a rapid retrieve across the surface. This type of action keeps the peacock bass very interested. Live bait works best but you can work your plastics from top to bottom. Experiment with your baits. Peacock bass love to hit top water. It's best to first try a topwater approach, lures like jerkbaits and top water plugs. For smaller surface baits you can try poppers, propeller plugs or walking spook baits. After you've worked this method awhile you can switch to subsurface tactics, such as jerkbaits and buck-tail jigs. Working top to bottom you'll significantly improve your odds of catching a trophy. Keep in mind the Peacock bass are voracious feeders, so you might want to think about using saltwater plugs because they are more durable.
