Adding saltwater species

Blog by: David Coulson , CO 12/12/2013

We’re continually working to meet the needs of the fishing community at FishExplorer.com.  The site is geared toward anglers helping anglers through conditions reports, calendar events, guest blogs, articles, forum posts and even lake/river page input.  There are some items, however, that are generally maintained by management, such as the species list.

In response to the requests for saltwater listings in Florida, Texas, and California, we’ve started the process and after the first of year we’ll begin adding saltwater fisheries to Fish Explorer.  Part of the process is making sure that we have the species anglers are likely to encounter on the site, something I’m working on now.

Inshore species I’m looking to add or have added include: Black Drum, Black Grouper, Bluefish, Bonefish, Catfish (sailcats), Cobia, Croakers, Flounder, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Mangrove Snapper, Mullet, Pigfish, Pompano, Redfish (Red Drum), Sheepshead, Snook, Spanish Mackerel, Spotted Seatrout, Tarpon, Tripletail, and Weak fish.  I recognize this list is far from complete, so if there is a fish that should be on the list, let me know and we’ll get it added.  As I add these fish, they won’t yet be assigned to waters, which will come as we add the fisheries. Last night I put up the information on black drum and will keep you posted as we continue added saltwater fish to our species list.

Aside from needing species suggestions, we’d love to get member pictures for each of the fish.  If you have any good side shots of solo specimens, please send them my way, dave@fishexplorer.com.  Also, which waters would you like to see added first?  Remember your input will only make the site better.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
