Join the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area’s "Hanging Out - Outdoors" and Junior Ranger Programs

The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is on the lookout for energetic and enthusiastic kids for a variety of programs throughout the summer.

SALIDA, Colo. – The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is on the lookout for energetic and enthusiastic teens, ages 12-17, to participate in a variety of outdoor recreation activities every Friday throughout the summer with the groundbreaking "Hanging Out – Outdoors" program. The first program, on June 10, will be a thrilling zip line ride across Arkansas River canyon country. Other Friday programs include horseback riding, geo-caching with a map and compass, hot springs swimming and river rafting. Participants must call ahead to reserve a spot because space is limited and parental permission is required. Transportation from the AHRA Visitor Center in Salida will be provided and a small activity fee may be charged, although there will be no cost for many of the outdoor opportunities.

The AHRA is also offering many other captivating activities for curious kids, ages 5-11, who want to become Junior Rangers and learn about nature and the great outdoors, starting June 8. In conjunction with the Salida and Buena Vista Summer Recreation Programs, the AHRA is offering nine exciting Junior Ranger programs this summer from "Water’s the Matter?" to "Scavenger Hunt" and ending in August with the Junior Ranger Rafting Trip.

Salida’s Junior Ranger programs will be held on Wednesday each week from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Riverside Park in Salida, beginning on June 8. The program on June 15 will be held at Alpine Park.

Buena Vista’s Junior Ranger programs will be held on Thursday each week from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Community Center on East Main in Buena Vista, beginning on June 9. All Junior Ranger programs are free of charge.

The AHRA invites local youth to experience their award-winning programs and create memories that last a lifetime. Don’t be bored, get outdoors! For more information on Hanging Out – Outdoors or the Junior Ranger programs, contact the AHRA at (719) 539-7289. For a calendar of events and programs, visit www.parks.state.co.us and click on the Arkansas Headwaters.

The AHRA is managed through a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management and Colorado State Parks. Formed in 1989, this partnership allows agencies to provide visitors with recreation opportunities and care for significant natural resources of the Upper Arkansas River Valley.
