Loveland Fire and Rescue Authority received the call at 8:48 p.m. about a person in the water at Boedecker Lake. Two men in a canoe had capsized it and immediately began calling for help.
A bystander in another boat was able to rescue one of the men and took him to shore. When the bystander went back to where the canoe had capsized, though, he could not find the second man.
Crews arrived five minutes after the call, including a dive team. Three dives were made between eight and 15 feet deep, but nothing was seen. The body of the 21-year-old man was found on the third dive. He did not survive.
“Visibility in the water is absolutely zero. So they’re doing everything by feel trying to locate that victim,” said Scott Pringle of Loveland Fire & Rescue.
Authorities say the body may have been in the water for an hour and 15 minutes before being retrieved.
The first man rescued suffered no injuries.
