On the Steamboat Springs side, the road is currently gated closed about three miles east of the Dry Lake Campground above the top of the switchbacks. Forest visitors coming from the Walden side should be aware that the road is closed at milepost 15 near the junction with Forest Road 625. Motorists are reminded to not drive off-road to get around snow drifts or gates. This causes damage to roads and natural resources, as well as puts travelers at risk of becoming stuck.
“While the late-season snowpack will be beneficial to many natural resources, it has reduced early summer access and we appreciate the public remaining patient,” said Hahns Peak-Bears Ears District Ranger Chad Stewart. “We will monitor conditions on both sides with the intent of opening up as soon as feasible, possibly within the next couple of weeks. Until then, there are many areas already open to access and enjoy.”
Forest visitors are encouraged to contact the Forest Service prior to traveling to this area to verify the open status and road conditions. Hahns Peak-Bears Ears Ranger District, 925 Weiss Drive, Steamboat Springs, CO, (970)870-2299 Parks Ranger District, 100 Main Street, Walden, CO, (970)723-2700
