Aspen Ranger District Reduces Winter Visitor Information Services

ASPEN, Colo. – Nov. 13, 2013 – The Aspen Ranger District will be reducing Visitor Information Services starting Monday, November 18. From November 18 through December 31, the Aspen Ranger District will be open only on Fridays from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Starting January 1st through May 1st 2014, the Aspen Ranger District will not be open to the public, and therefore, will be closed Monday - Friday.

The change in public services is due to the Aspen and Sopris Ranger District’s inability to fully staff the visitor information services program in two offices. "With a significant number of vacancies and reduced budgets, the ability for the District to provide high quality customer service is becoming increasingly difficult. Consolidating visitor information services to one Forest Service location this winter will help improve the quality of our public service," said Acting District Ranger David Francomb. The Aspen and Sopris Ranger District visitor information services program is the only program the district is currently adjusting. All other district program public support needs will continue to be met throughout the winter months.

The primary purpose of keeping Aspen Ranger District open on Fridays in November and December is to sell woodcutting and Christmas tree permits. After December 31st, customers needing wood cutting permits or other services from the Aspen and Sopris Ranger District can fulfill those needs by either visiting or calling the Sopris Ranger District at 620 Main Street in Carbondale. The Sopris Ranger District will provide complete Visitor Information Services throughout the winter. The Sopris Ranger District hours of operation are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Visitors are encouraged to call or stop in for Forest Service information throughout the winter during the new published operating hours. All calls directed to the Aspen or Sopris Ranger District should be made to 970-963-2266. The White River National Forest website also has recreation and trail information available at For further information, please contact Acting Aspen-Sopris Ranger David Francomb at 970-963-2266.
