MONTROSE, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has announced implementation of an emergency public fish salvage for the South Canal which is located east of Montrose.
All bag and possession limits will be lifted for the area from the West Portal of the Gunnison Tunnel to the canal's confluence with the Uncompahgre River. Anglers must have a Colorado fishing license. Fish can be taken only by hook and line or by snagging. The salvage order is in effect from Nov. 7 through Dec. 31.
The tunnel transports irrigation water to the Uncompahgre Valley from the Gunnison River. Some brown and rainbow trout are caught in the flow and end up in the canal. Water is stopped from flowing into the tunnel every year on Oct. 31
Anglers are warned to be careful when fishing along the canal which has steep banks that are often slippery. The canal can be accessed from U.S. Highway 50.
