Colorado State Parks Press Release
SALIDA, Co – The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is hosting the 18h Annual Arkansas River Cleanup/Greenup on Saturday, May 16. Each year, over 350 volunteers scour the banks of the Arkansas River between Leadville and Canon City to pick up litter and debris to give the river corridor a thorough spring cleaning.

Individuals and groups that want to volunteer should sign up on May 16, between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at the Buena Vista River Park on East Main Street in Buena Vista or at the AHRA Visitor Center at 307 W. Sackett Street in Salida. From there, the race is on to scour the river banks and other public lands for unwanted and unsightly trash.

Every volunteer who signs up will receive trash bags and a volunteer Cleanup button, which will serve as their ticket to the volunteer picnic. The picnic takes place at Riverside Park in Salida from noon until 3 p.m., following the Cleanup/Green-up activities, and will include food, prizes, fun and music by the local band “The Groove Farmers.”

In addition to the Cleanup/Greenup in Salida, from 2-4 pm, there will be the Salida Police Bike Rodeo between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for kids up to age 12, including a “race” and safety course starting at the F Street Bridge. At 4:30 p.m., FIBArk will hold their annual Cruiser Crit parade and event on F Street.

AHRA is working with the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) and the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) to make the 18th annual Cleanup/Greenup a success.

Everyone is invited to participate in this huge volunteer event that kicks off the summer season on the Arkansas River. The Arkansas River Cleanup is one of the largest and oldest National River Cleanup events in the country and is recognized for its commitment to and pride in the river and the surrounding public recreation areas.

Come on over! Come all! Give a little time and work that will mean a lot! Call AHRA at (719) 539-7289 or GARNA at (719) 539-5106 for more information or for advance signups.
