Colorado Parks and Wildlife announces the closure of the Sam Caudill State Wildlife Area (SWA) beginning in August for multiple improvement projects. The SWA will be closed beginning Aug. 8, 2024, with an anticipated reopening in March of 2025. During the closure, all public access to the SWA will be prohibited.

Improvements to the SWA will include a new boat ramp, staging area, and new entrance to provide one-way directional access.

"We want to thank our sportsperson's community for the patience as we work on these much-needed improvements," said Darren Chacon, Glenwood Springs Assistant Area Wildlife Manager. "The improvements will not only improve access and improve the experience of our sportspersons, but they will also add much-needed safety improvements as well."

In addition to the new boat ramp, the shoulder on the south side of the county road will be widened, and stabilizing areas in the river to improve the ramp site.

Vessels can still be launched from the boat ramp located at Bob Terrell State Wildlife Area, near the Town of Carbondale. However, because the boat ramp at Sam Caudill SWA is closed, boaters will need to plan extra travel time for their trip to reach the next available boat ramp in Glenwood Springs.

The Sam Caudill SWA ( [log in for link] ) is located beneath the old Westbank bridge at the intersection of County Road 154 and 109. It is on a narrow strip of land between Highway 82 and the Roaring Fork River. Improvements to the boat ramp have been made possible through sportsperson dollars, and grants from Pitkin County Healthy Rivers and Garfield County
