CPW responds to growth of ice fishing by offering clinic at State Forest State Park
CPW News Release
GOULD, Colo. - Colorado Parks and Wildlife has noticed an increasing interest in fishing over frozen waters, especially at many reservoirs located in Colorado's state parks. The agency says as the popularity of ice fishing grows, so does the need for clinics to teach aspiring ice anglers about safety, equipment and the proper way to land a fish through a small hole punched through the ice.

At State Forest State Park, CPW will hold a clinic for anyone interested in learning the finer points of ice fishing. The one-day event is open to anglers of all ages and abilities. Meet at the park's Moose Visitor Center at 10 a.m., March 16. Registration is required. Call 970-723-8366 to reserve your spots.

"Like many outdoor activities, folks want to participate but it's difficult when they don't have a mentor," said Senior Park Ranger Anthony Johnson. "In general, ice fishing is not hard to do but it can be a challenge if you don't know what you're doing. Now's your chance to get some great advice and info from experienced ice anglers."

Johnson says one of the most important things to learn is safety on the ice.

"If you don't know the basics such as how to self-rescue or how to check the ice thickness, this clinic is a must," he said. "Knowing how to use an auger, a depth finder and the right kind of bait are all important of course, but none of those things are as important as safety."

State Forest State Park will provide fishing gear, hot beverages and a place to fish. Attendees should bring warm clothing, a chair and a sack lunch.

Anyone over the age of 16 must have a valid fishing license. The event is free however, participants must have a valid park pass.
