In the interest of public safety, Waterton Canyon will be closed to public access Friday, Sept. 1, to allow the U.S. Forest Service unobstructed access to a fire on U.S. Forest Service land in Douglas County.
The fire is on a ridge above Strontia Springs Reservoir. No Denver Water facilities or structures are threatened at this time.
Around noon today, local jurisdictions responded with air tankers, helicopters and hand crews to begin fire suppression. The canyon will remain closed all day Friday as crews work to contain the fire.
The canyon is expected to be open this weekend, but further details will be provided Friday afternoon.
For questions on the fire, please contact the U.S. Forest Service fire information line at 719-299-1567.
