Lake John/Delaney Butte Lakes
23, March, 2017
I went around and checked some water yesterday and what I found surprised me. This past week or so of warm, breezy weather has taken a bigger toll on the surface ice of area lakes than first thought. Although there were a few people that found safe ice for fishing Lake John down off the west point, there are now several areas around the lake that are inaccessible. I didnít get around to check the entire perimeter, but water is present in all the usual, early places.
The Delaneys are about the same. East Delaney is nearly open enough for a float tube from the inlet along the NW shoreline. The most open water of any. North and South Delaney Lakes are showing at least a little open water in all the initial places. Most of the secondary backroads are now open enough to drive around the lakes, although you can expect some serious mud in places.
It is supposed to get colder for the next 24-48 hours but I donít believe it will be enough to make things very safe. There are probably still some spots where the ice is fishable, however it may not be where you like. From what I saw yesterday, safety equipment is a must. The most important part of that equipment would be common sense. Donít leave home without it!
