CSARATOGA – A construction project to replace a leaking headgate at Saratoga Lake is now underway. The work is required to comply with safety regulations governing dam safety administered by the State Engineer’s office. The construction will also ensure that an adequate water supply remains in the lake to maintain the fishery throughout the winter.

The work is being done by a private sector construction firm and is scheduled to be completed before the annual Saratoga Lake Ice fishing Derby in January, 2012. During the derby, any remaining construction activity will be suspended until the derby is concluded.

Anglers coming to Saratoga Lake this fall are advised that automobile access to the north end of the dam will be closed and pedestrian and fishing access to the construction site will also be closed for public safety. The west portion of the dam and all other shoreline access will remain open to public fishing, waterfowl hunting, and automobile access.

This project is part of a continuing effort by the WGFD during the past 20 years to maintain and improve the Saratoga Lake Public Access Area for the enjoyment of the public and to benefit waterfowl habitat and the trout fishery in the lake.

In past years, the WGFD has worked in cooperation with the city of Saratoga, the Old Baldy Club, the Silver Spur Ranch, Trout Unlimited, the Storer Foundation, and Ducks Unlimited on numerous projects. Those projects have included the development of the camping area, the boat ramp and dock, water inlet and outlet structures for the lake, and the construction of the Storer Wetlands ponds.

The WGFD asks the public to comply with the reduced access around the construction site as they enjoy the fishing and waterfowl hunting around the rest of the Saratoga Lake Public Access Area this winter and spring.
