EAGLE, CO. – Sylvan Lake State Park will reel in fly fishermen from around the world this weekend, Sept. 15-18, as it plays host to The America Cup International Fly Fishing Tournament. The America Cup is a catch-and-release fly fishing tournament with 70 international, U.S., youth and women anglers competing. In addition to Sylvan Lake State Park, events will take place at Lake Nottingham in Avon, and on the Colorado River and the Blue River.
Each of the 14, five-member teams will be at Sylvan Lake State Park once over the weekend. Friday and Saturday sessions at Sylvan are from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Sunday session will be from 9 a.m. to noon, only. Anglers fish in five three-hour sessions, and points are awarded for each trout caught and its length.
Spectators interested in catching the action at Sylvan Lake can get a good view from anywhere around the lake or on the water. A 1.25-mile trail around the lake has benches located in several spots for spectators interested in catching part of the tournament. The public will still be allowed on the lake during the tournament, but all boats must be at least 40 yards away from competitors.
All visitors are required to have a Colorado State Parks vehicle pass. Vehicle passes are $7 per day or $70 for an annual pass. Passes can be purchased at the entrance gate located at the lake or at the Visitor’s Center.
