For most practical purposes, the reclamation of Lake John is over, and this past Saturday's Labor Day weekend opener was a huge success. The fish, who were new arrivals of course, played favorites to quite a few fishermen and women. I know of two eight-fish stringers, one of which weighed nearly 30 pounds, and another close to 40. The quarry showed a hunger for everything from lures and spinners to all the flavored chemical baits. Many more hit flies, no matter whether fished with the long rod or by bug and bubble. Water levels continue to rise slowly and are up nearly a foot from their lowest point. The north boat ramp is currently usable, however water levels will need to come up more before the south ramp will handle trailers, although car-toppers, rafts, and personal watercraft should all be okay. The trout seemed to be fairly well dispersed, with reports of success coming from all parts of John.
