If hiking is a desired activity in addition to fishing, the Crag Crest National Recreational Trail towers above Butts Lake. This trail is a 6.4 mile hike between the two trailheads on the east and west ends, rising to an impressive elevation of 11,189 ft. with 360 degree panoramic views of aver 100 miles. Getting there:
From Cedaredge, travel north on Highway 65 for 6 miles and turn right [east] onto Forest Road 121. Go approximately 2.5 miles to the Eggleston Lake dam. At the fork in the road, go left staying on FR 121 along Eggleston Lake to the Crag Crest Campground. Park there and go to the trailhead for the Crag Crest National Recreation Trail, #711. Hike 1 mile on the trail, passing Upper Eggleston Lake, to a fork in the trail. Take the side trail to the left and reach Butts lake in 0.3 miles.
