The Gorge Lakes rank as one of the most inaccessible and remote places in the Park. From Milner Pass, the trail ascends 1,000 feet in under a mile. For the next three miles or so, the trail gradually ascends another 800 feet to a distinctive ridge line from Mount Ida which separates a series of unnamed shallow ponds in a valley to the north west of the Gorge Lakes and the Gorge Lakes themselves.
From the Continental Divide Trail, follow the ridge line to the northeast just before reaching the summit of Mount Ida. Following the ridge line to the northeast for about a mile and a half brings you to an overlook of Arrowhead Lake which makes for a safe descent along steep terrain and rock. The descent to Arrowhead Lake is deceiving - it looks only a few hundred feet below the ridge line, but that is actually 4/10 of a mile away and 850 ft down.
