From Collbran, travel south on Forest Service Road 121 for 12 miles to the intersection with Forest Road #257. This junction is near the south end of Bonham Reservoir. Turn right onto 257 and proceed west 1.6 miles. Turn left onto the 4WD road which may be labelled as FS 256 or 257.1B. The road entrance is not easy to see from the main road so look closely when odometer reaches 1.4 miles. Travel 0.8 miles past Silver Lake to Forty Acre Lake. The road to to the lake is rutted, rough and frequently muddy. One can also park on FS 257 and walk the road or bushwhack to the lake.
From Cedaredge or Mesa, travel on Highway 65 to FS121. Turn east and carefully follow FS 121 until the junction with FS 257. Turn left and follow instructions above to the lake. NOTE: a map is very useful if following this route to the lake.
