Little Gem Reservoir is one of the lakes in the "Island Lake Grouping" on the Grand Mesa. Campgrounds, commercial lodging (cabins and motel rooms), fuel, food, bait and tackle, fishing licenses, boat rentals and the U.S. Forest Service's Grand Mesa Visitor Center are all nearby, providing ammenities and information for the angler.
From Cedaredge, go north on Highway 65 approximately 17 miles. Just past the Forest Service Visitor Center, take a left turn onto FS road 116 (often called Island Lake Rd.) which will skirt the south side of the lake. About 0.6 miles from the turn, there is a dirt road which leads part way to the lake. Walk the remaining 0.1 mile to the lake. One can also park at the Island Lake day use or campground area and hike 0.3 miles to the lake which is visible from FS116. It may also be possible to get near the lake by turning south onto FS115 which is approximately 0.7 miles from the turn off on Highway 65 and take a spur on the left to the lake.
Alternatively, from Mesa travel 22.6 miles on Highway 65 to the marked turn for FS 116 on the right side of the road. Just past the Island Lake campground, take FS115 which leads south. Stop west of the lake and hike the remaning 0.2 miles to the lake. One can also hike to the lake from the Island Lake day use area or campground.
