Summit Lake is the highest freshwater lake that is fishable in the lower 48 states. Expect beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife as well as tourists. There are nice cutthroats in the lake but because of the elevation the fishing can be temperamental. Please keep to trails and do not walk on the fragile arctic tundra. Getting there:
From Idaho Springs take highway 103 to Echo Lake. At Echo Lake take the turn-off to highway 5 at the toll booth then continue to the lake--about 5 miles.
