Set in a high alpine setting, Paonia State Park is a beautiful mountain lake with views of the Ragged Mountains. Paonia has suffered through the years of drought with low water levels. There are no hiking trails in the park, but you can find numerous trails in the nearby Ragged Wilderness. The pike fishery has declined with a managed kill-off. The lake is stocked with trout. Getting there:
From Glenwood Springs, take CO 82 south to Carbondale, then south on CO133 for 46 miles to the park. From Delta, take Highway 92 east to Hotchkiss, then go north on Highway 133 through Paonia and 16 miles farther to the park.
