Mountain Home Reservoir, located four miles southeast of Fort Garland, is a popular local fishing destination. In addition to fishing, visitors can enjoy a primitive camping experience. Wildlife viewing is also a popular activity. Because the water is used for irrigation, lake levels vary considerably.
From Fort Garland (26 miles east of Alamosa), go 2.5 miles east on Hwy 160 to the Trinchera Ranch Road N turnout to the south. Proceed south for 2 miles to Ice House Road, and then travel 1 mile west on Ice House Road. This brings you to the SWA entrance on the north side of the lake. To get to south side, go south past Ice House Rd about .25 miles to where the road bends east and turn right onto County Lane 6 mile for about 0.8 miles and turn west into the SWA.
