Lake: Green Mountain Reservoir

Snagging Season

Post By: not too old to fish      Posted: 10/1/2024 5:01:15 PM     Points: 9258
Has anyone tried snagging for Kokanee at Green mountain reservoir this year. I know they put some koks in a few years ago but not sure if it was 4 years. CPW biologist was going to stock every other year until he was satisfied they would thrive and make it to maturity.

I called CPW yesterday and they said that people are going up to Green Mountain Reservoir to fish for them and snag for them, but she hadn’t heard of any catching yet

I quite honestly would have thought this was no longer legal. Damaged fish and lost hooks.,Lost while left snagged on bottom structure permanently certainly seems like a bad idea to me. Just voicing an opinion, any feed back?

Snagging has been somewhat controversial for years and has limited use areas. I believe the concept was to utilize the salmon before they died off completely as they do after spawning. They are not good table fare imo but are still great when smoked. I was trying to get a feel for how many salmon may be in the reservoir for future use during the rest of the year.

I agree 100% with Kirk, outdated barbaric unsportsmanlike and adds to stream and river pollution..

The inlet was lined with snaggers a week ago, fwiw. Lots of out of staters hitting blue river as well.

I like my Salmon whole and not with a bloody hole in them. I go to Wolford and get my Salmon from the egg collection crew . . .if you talk to Evert the DNR guy, you will learn when and where to line up to get a cooler full . . .if you really are sharp, you learn how to hook the Salmon on sweet corn right at the boat ramp while you wait for the egg collectors to come back from the trap . . .that gives you a second limit of Salmon that is legal to have . . .sometimes the egg collectors go back to the trap and return with another load of Salmon to pass out . . .no snagging involved! The Salmon are stocked into Wolford at the boat ramp and return to the boat ramp area on the years they are still growing up . . .you can catch them on sweet corn fished on a small jig pulled behind and under a float . . .Salmon caught by hook on corn are counted as part of limit you are allowed . . .the Salmon the egg collection crew give you are not part of that limit . . .one year there was a nasty snow storm and very few folks showed up for the fish giveaway . . . .some folks went home with over 50 Salmon . . .
