Winter conditions and winter access at Walthrop State Park

Post By: JimO      Posted: 9/27/2024 8:14:26 PM     Points: 0
A few days ago I talked to a ranger at Walthrop State Park about winter access and conditions at Martin Lake. I am an iceboater from northern New Mexico and in the past iceboated on Eagle Nest and Maloya Lake plus a few others. I want to be able to iceboat on Martin Lake as a backup. The ranger was unknowledgable and unhelpful. Do any of you ice fish there? What is the access situation? My iceboat comes apart and is light enough for me to carry up to 100 or 200 feet, so I don't have to back up my car to the ice, although I would much rather do that. Do you just go out to the lake in winter and don't concern yourself with park rangers?

Hey JimO. I don't know of any restrictions against it, but don't think I would ever feel safe stepping on the ice there. (Assume you're talking Lathrop SP). I never heard of an iceboat. I had to google it. You probably have way more tolerance for risk than I do.

If you want some windy ice, Id say the south park area or Chambers lake. I saw a guy "iceboating" in February at Antero Reservoir. Didn't know what it was called until I saw this post.
