Local trout painting

Decided to share this… Ii wasn’t able to fish yesterday, so I painted a fish instead. 20”x30” acrylic on canvas.

As inspiration, I used a photo I took recently at Button Rock nature preserve. By no means an attempt at photorealistic replication, my style is generally impressionistic.

I took the creative license to put much of the rock in the foreground underwater (based on the high water mark, that’s actually possible), and imagined what it would look like from a half-submerged perspective. I looked at a photo of a brown trout I found on the internet as a model for the fish. However, I used my pic of the actual brown trout I caught and released that day at Button Rock as the model for the spots and coloration.

One of the biggest challenges of this painting was transposing the colors of the trout to what it would look like underwater. There’s a lot I wish I could do better, but I don’t spend much time practicing art these days. There are painters who specialize in fish, and there’s an entire cottage industry of artists who do just trout, which makes it humbling to even attempt it.

Very cool eholm! I envy you artistic folks. I am about as artistic as a drunk rhinoceros.

Thank you guys, I certainly appreciate the kind words :-)

LOL Troutbisquits, I happen to be a believer that everyone can do art, and can benefit from the act of it, even if it doesn't look "good".
