Lake: Horsetooth Reservoir
Fish: Rainbow Trout

Abnormal Trout

Post By: KnuteFisher      Posted: 4/24/2024 2:35:40 PM     Points: 202
I fished at Horsetooth Reservoir yesterday morning from 9-11 and caught a few rainbows from shore on the north end. One of the trout had an unusually shaped head. I have fished for 30+ years and never seen anything like it. Curious if anyone else has seen this before or knows if this might be a result of whirling disease or something else?

Looks like it fell for a lure with 2 barbed treble hooks as a child.

Looks like you got a dork fish there. Lol my guess is a deformed in the hatchery. Iíve caught a few like that before. Weird looking. It will make a big walleye happy some day.

Hatchery mess up . . .when ya push as many fish out the door as the hatchery's do . . .there's bound to be a messed up fish now and then. Not to worry,I'm suprised we don't see more of them.

Yes Sir, I've caught Rainbow trout in some high altitude lakes like that. I've always thought it was damage from the helicopter drop stocking process. Interesting and good opinions here.

That's a neat cutbow. As others have suggested, it looks like the remnants of some kind of injury. What caused the injury is certainly up for debate! Resilient fish though!

Quite a few fish that look like that in dowdy and west lakes in redfeather lakes.
