Really enjoying the Umpqua items from the Winter Giveaway

Post By: Banzai Jimmy      Posted: 2/11/2024 9:19:50 PM     Points: 12602
I look forward to the giveaway each year. I was fortunate to win the Umpqua fly tying items (tools, hooks, beads, box), as I was in need of some tools (dubbing tweezers, dubbing loop spinner, better hair stackers, etc.).

My dubbing loop skills were poor, as I just wasn't good at them. But with proper tools, they're much easier! I'm focused on soft hackle dubbing loops for now.

They send "jig bombs" beads, which I'd never seen before. Ran across a picture of them used on a jig hook (which they also sent), so I decided to play tonight.

I suppose the fly fits into the jig streamer category. LOL I was using what I had sitting on the tying table... some marabou for the tail, peacock for the body, and dyed guinea hen barbs for the hackle.

Can't wait for this year's giveaway! Everyone should be building points to get their chances increased. :)

Banzai, excellent fly, that would be a killer damsel nymph, any for sale? ADub

ADub, my skills are far from saleable. Maybe one day...

Nicely done, I was really gunning for that prize too :-)

Thank you! I was splitting the bulk of my votes between this and the Costa sunglasses. It's a good thing I didn't win the sunglasses, as I learned the hard way (after buying a pair last month) that my prescription is too strong for wrap around lens for those frames. Would have been nice if my optometrist had known this they couldn't get the frame in the color I wanted so I bought my own. I go back and then they discover the prescription issue. Oh well.

Very nice looking fly! I bet it will catch a fish or 2,000. I've been curious about the jig bomb heads myself. I tie a lot of balanced stuff, and jig stuff in general. Also... good to know who my competition was for that entry, lol.

Thank you. I meant to run something through the eye and test the balance, but got distracted. Am curious to know if it actually balances out, or comes close.

So now I see what the points are all about. Never really considered this to a "likes" contest but I get it now.

I'm not quite following the "likes" contest bit. Feel free to explain, if you like (pun intended!).

The bulk of my site participation is via fishing reports. I rarely post in the forum, and thus am not generating lots of "likes" that way. But, I wanted to put something up related to the giveaway items I received since I respect the amount of work that goes into arranging such a thing and I appreciate those companies that donate to it. I am not flush with funds due to lots of bad life choices (LOL!), so to win means a lot to me.

Jimmy - don't worry about an opinion like that. The Fins Up you're receiving for this post are well deserved. It's because you provided a good post with good information and quite frankly I would like to see more people show their appreciation for the WG because Matt puts in TONS of work for us on this.

Its crazy how a text, email or post can get sideways quickly. If 2 people were just sitting there talking, the same things could be said with no issue whatsoever. I had a guy rip on my post when I started with FXP and commented how few "fins-up" I had. Never considered seeking any "fins-up" for any reason and didn't know they were good for bling until recently. Did not mean to be negative. Fish-on brothers..............

Someone else would have to confirm this, but I don't think the likes get you "bling" (which I presume means items in the WG?). Though, likes are a factor in calculating one's contribution to the site. Maybe that recognition is bling?

Back to the real topic... the WG! Thank you to Umpqua and all the other companies for donating and giving someone like me a chance to enjoy some new gear. My fly tying toolset was incomplete and this was a big help for upping my skills.
