Post By: SirGreg88      Posted: 10/19/2023 3:05:34 PM     Points: 408
I somehow landed a huge pike this morning on a fly with 6 lb fluorocarbon. I had to keep it but I don't have a fillet knife and I have no experience with pike. They are supposedly tricky. I would pay someone to do it!!!! I live near Parker and 225. HELP!!!!!

Youtube is your friend. Lots of good tutorials on there about how to properly fillet a Pike. And drive over to a sporting goods store or a Walmart and get a fillet knife. Then you are prepared for the next time. And congrats on the big Pike.

I never have kept a pike and I doubt I ever will again. I don't filet fish either. I eat every part of them. Used to be able to go to Sam's Meats for them to smoke trout when I brought home something over 6-7 lbs. They don't do that anymore and they refused to help me out today. Looks like I'm going to end up cooking it in my biggest turkey pan and pick the meat apart. I will need to cut it in half for it to fit!!!

I know this is not the answer you want, but as a kid mom would steam them and cool the meat . .then she would pick the meat off the bones and make fish patties . . . .fish meat, bread crumbs, egg , , ,mix and fry.I'd add some flavor . . .IE onion, garlic, cajon seasonings?

Just go for it and get some practice then. No one will see what your filets look like. Filet it like any typical fish, and don't worry about wasting parts of the fish. With such a big fish, it should be relatively easy to end up with some edible filets or at least chunks, LOL.

Or, if you don't want to filet it, just gut it like any gut-job. Then cook it. I watch that show Alone and that's how they eat Pike in a survival situation.

I saw online there's some bloodline thingy that needs to be removed. Does that really need to be removed?

No bloodline involved. It is pretty easy, especially on a big fish. Just filet it like any other fish then take out the y bones, skin and eat.

Worked for me the first time I ever did it. I'm not a fish eater, but I found Pike to be a pretty mild tasting fish. Try it. It's not hard with this method.

Show us a picture of that golden fried pike platter SirGreg. You can do it.
If you put it in the dumpster, it will walk back to the lake.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I ended up cleaning it , cutting the head off and then cutting it almost in half to fit in the large turkey pan. I filled the cavity with a couple onions/seasoning and baked it at 350 for about 2hrs and 45 minutes. Had to flip him halfway through. Then I did what Hawaii man suggested. I pulled the skin off and picked all the edible meat apart by hand to assure boneless chunks. I think I will do what he suggested and add ingredients to make patties/cakes to fry in a skillet or deep fry--and serve with tarter sauce or something.. Wasn't after pike and I surely wasn't rigged for it but I luckily hooked him in the upper lip and the teeth somehow never cut me off. My wife will help me make a post with the pics. No convex/fisheye lens or stiff arming--just to pacify you benny haters. Jeez Louise guys!!!

Sir Greg . . .we were dirt poor and mom could turn anything I caught into a meal . . . .Progresso Italian bread crumbs work great. We had a paper bag in a kitchen drawer that any bread crusts or stale bread went into . . .yep . .bread crumbs.. . .also duck food for the ducks at the park.Talk about a simpler time.
I look forward to learning how the fish patty's turn out for you.
B.T.W. . . .when it comes to getting the most meat out of a fish, nothing beats my "Black & Decker" eletric carving knife . . .Wallmart $19.99 . . . youtube will show you everything you need to know.
