Lake: Road Canyon Reservoir

Toxic algae warning

Post By: Senor Pescador      Posted: 8/4/2023 4:42:47 PM     Points: 107
I spoke with the CPW office this morning in Monte Vista and they verified what I saw posted on 9 news channel out of Denver—that Toxic algae has been found in Road Canyon Reservoir. The CPW did say that consuming fish is ok but according to the CDPHE: "If these algae overgrow, bloom, or produce poisons, they can cause various symptoms in people that go into the water, including skin irritation, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and a sore throat," CDPHE said. "This toxic algae can also kill pets, such as dogs."
Just an FYI for everyone heading up there. Apparently the same is true for Beaver Creek reservoir, and La Jara Reservoir here in the SLV, as well as at least 6 other reservoirs in the state.
Stay safe everyone and tight lines😁

I wonder about DeWeese Reservoir as well? Anyone?

Haven't heard anything official on DeWeese. It was clear last time I went, but that was early July. 2021 it looked like pea soup.

Haven’t seen or heard anything about DeWeese reservoir. Here’s something that may be helpful in determining whether a body of water is at dangerous levels:

Here are CDPHE's tips on how to tell if an algae bloom is harmful:
•If it resembles thick pea soup or spilled paint on the water.
•If it looks discolored (generally green, red, gold or turquoise but typically not stringy or mustard yellow--the latter is probably pollen).
•If it has foam, scum or algae mats.
