Home Lake Open and Safe to Consume Fish

Hi all. CPW Biologist sent me the following info on Home Lake. here tis....
This issue is really related to the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) as they are the regulating agency responsible for pesticide and herbicide use. My involvement as mandated by a state administrative directive is to document any mortality to fish or wildlife (snails). In working and reporting this to the CDA, I was only involved in estimating the number of dead snails which I have sent to their investigators. They took the lead in collecting water and vegetation samples from the lake. I raised the question of whether we should be concerned about human fish consumption to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Water Quality Control Division. The recommendation from both was to err on the side of caution and close the lake until we could learn more. The lake remained closed while the CDA and CDPHE worked on investigating the incident. Those agencies informed CPW that they found no concentrations of any chemicals that they believe to be harmful to humans and recommended the reopening of the lake. On June 30th the Monte Vista Office released the following information on all social media accounts informing people of the lake reopening:

"UPDATE: Home Lake State Wildlife Area will reopen to public fishing tomorrow, July 1. At this time, we no longer have reason to believe the water or fish are unsafe, and CDPHE has no added concern regarding fish consumption.

Thanks to CPW Aquatic Biologist for supplying the response to my/our questions.

Thanks for the update johnski! I personally haven’t been there to fish since the re-opening but I have talked to some there that have. They’re glad just to be able to fish there again. Too bad that happened. I guess time will tell how it is…
