Blue Mesa Kokanee

Post By: not too old to fish      Posted: 6/6/2023 9:16:11 AM     Points: 9171
Any recent reports on the Kokanee fishing in Blue Mesa? I may be there in mid July and the family wants to rent a boat and do some fishing.

Sporadic start to the salmon season. It should straighten out by end of June once the lake level evens out.

I'm heading that way tomorrow for the weekend. I haven't heard much as far as how the kokanee fishing is. I'll put up an update later.

Salmon bite is super tough right now. We managed two kokes this morning. Talked to several others at the fillet station, same story.

Thank you, Iím assuming itís because all the water this year, or do you think the population is down?

Not a big koke guy, but I think we are all kinda on our toes this year. Itís been so dry for the last couple years, and now there is water everywhere. Honestly if you study the historical levels we are getting back to more normal on average, and the fish as opportunistic creatures are moving and spreading a lot more than normal. They havenít been able to spread out quite this much in a few years. Blue mesa is up almost 50 feet from two years ago.

Itís a .com so not certain of accuracy of this site. *disclaimer*

That much water fluctuation is gonna move around the fish, and affect spawning success. My theory anyway.

Gill Lice and Drought have taken their toll on the salmon population as a whole.
What fish are out there are very scattered now that the lake is full. They are starting to get deeper which makes them easier to catch, but it's still a grind for sure.
