Lake: Cherry Creek Reservoir

cherry creek

went out there today and you could fish from the parking lot. along the tower end by the dam people were shore fishing in the parking lot. if you enter from the east side to the boat launch parking lot is under water. west end is under water as well but the bar is open. i saw a couple of kayaks and belly boats out and and one motorized fishing boat out there. people were in the inspection shacks , but there were people launching kayaks and that from anywhere around the lake. the cherry creek inlet road that curves around the swamp area the road is washed away. will be a long time fixin.

The real problem is not the dam did its job . . . .the problem now is when can the Army Core of engineers start letting the water out of the lake to bring the lake down to "normal" levels?
You have to have room in the rivers downstream before you can start letting water go from C.C. . . . .same goes for Chatty . . .

So, Is the West boat ramp still closed? Was hoping to put the boat in on Tuesday. Have been calling the office, but no answer.

Close to trailered boats until further notice . . . .I was out at C.C. this morning and the water on the west ramp was up to the gates they use to close the ramps . . .The dock on the west ramp was 30-40 feet from shore. The Core was letting water out of the tower . . .don't think you will be able to launch for 4-8 days to come.
303-690-1166 is the number I call . . .it goes right to the parks office . . .I called them this morning, before I drove out there.

Chatfield is good to go as an alternative. Just watch out for floating debris. 8-9 boats out when I drove by this morning.

Yep, Fished Chatty today, Water is a good 10 -12ft higher throughout the lake. Debris everywhere, even saw rangers towing out half a tree. Water temp was 58. Fish are skattered, think they are tryinmgh to figure out what to do :-)

Think they figured out there’s a ton of food up in the shallows. My guess is there are some mice in the stomachs of some large bass and walleye

From the website:

Park Flood Condition Update
The reservoir is receding very slowly, an average less than a ¼ inch per day. The park anticipates it will continue to only allow hand launch vessels throughout the weekend (5/20 -5/21). Forecasted storms throughout the week may impact the rate of receding waters.

The CC Website is pretty dated it’s been dropping a lot more than 1/4” a day as you can see from the website of NWS

Level now at 5553.82 parking lot high and dry lake looking great don’t see any issues, but the park officials seem in no hurry to reopen

West ramp reopens today. (Saturday 5/27). Bummer, as it's been paradise with only belly boats & Kayaks!

It's great to be "back in the saddle again" . . . .word of advice . . .come early as parking gets kind of crazy with just the west ramp and parking lot open.
