JERKBAIT WALLEYE

Post By: RockyMountainFlyGuy      Posted: 3/26/2023 2:47:55 PM     Points: 537
Been having some good luck getting the 'eyes on jerkbaits the past week. Thought I'd share some of the techniques that have been working: [log in for link]

It’s a fun bite! When the jerk bait hasn’t been working I’ve been picking up the blade bait. Gotta be careful not to get snagged either way!

Those rocks are hungry! I actually came away with more lures than I lost though.

Might want to double check if it’s OK to be fishing off the dam right now. Normally, and this is a direct quote from the regs,

“4. Fishing prohibited from dam and within 100 ft. of dam or walleye spawning nets Mar. 1 - April 15, or until walleye spawning operations are complete.”

I don’t see any nets or buoys up right now, but I know someone received a ticket last year for fishing from the dam before CPW had decided it wasn’t doing spawning ops at Chatfield. I haven’t heard yet what they’re doing this year. Might be worth a check with park office/rangers. Better than a ticket…

^^^ some great advice there. It’s always a good idea to check regs for any lake you want to fish.

From what I’ve heard lately no walleye netting/egg collection at Chatfield this year. This is just hear say on my part so a phone call to Cdow would clarify.

Good video! I wish more of the videos posted were more technique based like this one instead of guys just catching fish I find those one's pretty boring...

RockymtnFlyyguy. I’m sure a few were mine. In that spot a floating bait seems to be better and slow up the retrieve closer to shore. Ha you probably reeled in some real money. No walleye spawn at chatfield this year per the Terry Wickstrom program.

Yes, no dam closure this year. Not sure why, but they didn't do the normal collection. Rare opportunity to fish the dam during the spawn.

I emailed the park. Their response:
"The dam is open to fishing"

The 2023 walleye egg collection has met its goal and has been completed early, by gathering eggs from Pueblo and Cherry Creek.
