Colorado River, Worms, and a surprise catch

Last week before the snow and really bad weather came in, my GF and I decided to fish near her new apartment on the Colorado River. We were in Grand Junction (Far West Colorado), and heard that right by her apartment was some good fishing. We decided to do something we rarely do, and that is use live worms.

The weather was nice and sunny but cool fall temps, with some off and on afternoon wind. We were fishing with worm weights on a size 4 baitholder hook. Didn't want to rig up a full carolina rig as we didn't have to cast very far fishing the pockets and calmer current in the river. I was thinking of just putting some split shot up the line from the hook as well but didn't have any in my terminal tackle box (can't remember the last time I used split shot on it's own). Weightless was also considered but couldn't get to the pockets we wanted...We caught a whole bunch of roundtail chub and a surprise smallmouth bass. Haven't caught a bass out of a river since I lived in Minnesota, so that was fun.

All in all, a fun experience for the afternoon...Especially because we weren't thinking we would get much of anything. Below are some pictures of the day and also a video link if you're interested.

Cool. Never heard of anyone catching a smallmouth in that stretch.
