Fish: Brown Trout

Tis the season

Ditched work a few hours early. Went to my favorite run on the Gunnison River, the sun and the time of day made for a tough bite. After two hours, two small browns and two 16” bows were all I could muster. Mostly Yozuri cranks and jigs tied to imitate hoppers. Final Cast. Oh great, another snag on the bottom. Then it started moving! Ten minutes later, this beautiful hook jawed male brown, 25.5”, came to the net for a quick pic before going back to his deep rock shelf. Jim, you were right, the big boys are ready to bite n fight!

A 25.5" male brown - well that is really something. His rock shelf must serve some mighty nutritious trout food. Way to go landing such a beast.

Beautiful fish! If you keep catching fish like that, you're gonna need a bigger net.

Gotta love when the snag starts moving!! That's a beast, if you'd had a witness and a tape measure you coulda submitted it as the current state length record under the new rules: [log in for link]

Thanks for the appreciation of the fish, guys. Not much prettier than a male brown in spawning colors except maybe male brook trout or Tiger trout. Here’s a male Tiger I caught a month ago.

Very nice fish, Jerry. It truly is the season. You and I are fishing parallel experiences. I used a black and silver Yozuri all day long on a river near you, catching a fish a little smalller than yours, but the same net! Slipped over into Utah and caught a really nice Tiger on a silver and gold Kastmaster. Heading back over there next weekend with the annual Rocky Top teacher group.

Just a note on the silver Kastmaster, the lakes that have fathead chubs in them are attracting big fish in the low light hours near the shore. They are attacking schools of the small chubs with a ferocious attitude. A smaller Kastmaster is working very well for those conditions.

Good luck on your hunting trips this year!

Good hearing from you, Lance. That Yozuri goes back a long time on the Gunny. On the hard-fished rivers, the Pin’s Minnow works better for me. Flame gold and orange for October. Been using a Thomas Buoyant this year for lower water and more fluttering affect. But yep, the silver Kasty can’t be beat on lakes that have fatheads or stickleback minners.

Two more months till retirement, then fishing can happen on weekdays! You can drop by here when you need a warm place to sleep and a couple meals. But oughta Frito Pie for the moment.

Hunting with Mason for elk 4th season, he is a freshman already. Here is a pic of him with a nice cutt a few months back on the Unc. BTW, lost my wallet a month ago with your phone number so text it to me. Russ and I will be showing up next October/November at the Green.
