Hey salmon snaggers! Is it lawful to snag at Lake Dillon and if so can you please give me the regular tips (where, when, how)? Thank you!!!

It is NOT legal to snag salmon at Dillon. The regulations changed years ago, eliminating snagging. Not sure what happened, or why, but I’m certain there’s a valid reason for the closure.

Roger that! I know it was probably 10+ years ago I read about it at Dillon but knew I needed to verify whether still lawful or not. A friend recently moved to Dillon, I grew up in Durango and had a lot of fall fun doing it at Vallecito and McPhee.

Do you have any advice on areas of the lake I should concentrate on for shore fishing? I’m not a fly fisherman but consider myself a pretty good spin fisherman throwing hard baits and will soak bait if needed.

Thanks for all the advice!
Eric

As soon as the inlet has enough ice to hold you, there will be millions of people fishing for salmon. Small pink jigs tipped with shrimp or wax worms.

Depending on the flow from the Snake River inlet,, and the weather, the timing for “safe-ice” could be delayed this year. In low-flow years, the salmon still come in the area to spawn, but they stage farther west, so it takes longer for good ice to form. I’m sure there will be a post or two when Dillon becomes “ice-fishable”!
