Fish: Flathead Catfish

Freak Show

Haven't been able to fish for a few months. Finally got the boat out yesterday to try to satisfy my appetite for crappie and perch. This is the first thing I got into. Maybe the ugliest fish I've ever seen. Not sure what was wrong with it. Barely any meat on it, and a big growth of fungus on his chin. Still a good surprise & good fun on the ultralight. I think I've only caught 4 of these now in my life.

Cool fish! Looks like you're living up to your name. That fish is growing Barnacles!

Dude thatís a strange catch for Colorado for sure. Not many places hold those guys here. Thatís one fish on my bucket list. Never know what you will catch living on the bottom of the lakeÖ.

They are pretty cool fish and can get large. Nice catch.

Is it a catfish or a burbot?

I had to look up burbot. Sure looks similar, but this one is definitely a sickly flathead. As far as I know, only 3 lakes in Colorado have them. They're sure hard to catch - won't eat garbage and cut bait like a channel cat. Mostly caught on live bait or lures.
