Fish: Black Crappie

Sometimes... just sometimes

Post By: anglerwannabe      Posted: 4/26/2022 7:22:18 AM     Points: 73044
you have a good day. Took the day off and hung out with SGM yesterday and it initially started out a little rough with SGM's fish finder not wanting to start and then his new lures created problems. 1 wouldn't swim right, another broke on the first cast and yet another immediately got snagged... he almost got it out and then lost it. Notice... I didn't mention how it was for me? Well I started by catching a 20" walleye in the first couple minutes.. and of course right after that the rocks claimed that lure as a trophy... I had the same lure but in a larger size.. tied that on and lost something really big. The head shake was vicious.. changed lures caught a white bass.. changed lures caught another white bass... then we trolled a bit and SGM caught 2 more white bass..... then we moved and that was a great decision..... we absolutely hammered the crappie and they were big ones. Especially here for CO. You shoulda seen SGM's pained face when I made him start throwing some back! lol I think we wound up with a total of 41 or 42 fish and 5 different species.

We caught
Drum
walleye
saugeye
white bass
and Black Crappie!

I have had days better than this that included 18-inch Bass, Bluegills, Crappies, and sometimes Perch. This is on private water. How come I can't do this on public water?

Looks like it was a good day.

We just need some serious rain to refill that place.

Glad to see the crappie finally getting organized. Water temps have been all over the place recently, but should hit the magic zone this week. I caught two Sunday. No fair.

Nice job guys. I just want to know did y’all go from his spot to your spot or your spot to his spot? I have a pretty good guess but ……

After that first hour it was a great day. Only thing in pain today if my thumb from getting poked a few times filleting those crappies.

Thanks all

nparker - this was on public water and I've had better days than this too.. on that same body of water just by myself

RogBow - yes sir

Steve - we moved from his spot to my spot. BUT we used his technique. Using twister tails.. was pretty cool as I've never really used them before. And FYI.. it's exactly where you spoke with me that day you had to leave. And just for you.. the closer to shore you can fish, the better.

Russ - thank you for filleting all those fish. The Boss has already vacuumed sealed all of them.

I bet you and Russ had those fish all but jumping in the boat for you.

That is a fun lake. (At least I believe I know what lake this is) My father in law lives just across the highway from it. I have only fished it from shore, but had a blast doing it and caught the biggest crappie I have ever caught. And carp too. Haven't pulled an eye out of there yet though.

anglerwannabe awesome! Is it weird that I am most jealous of the Drum? I've never caught one of those.

poor little crappies. 😋

Brad - you need to get in better with your father-in-law! You go, give Russ and me a hollar and the least we can do is point you in the right direction

Brain and Bill - it was indeed a lot of fun and some of those crappie actually put up a surprisingly good fight!

Troutbiscuits - hit me up on my editors link and I'll see if we can help you catch a drum. I don't specifically target them but have caught them fairly regular using the same techniques for white bass and crappie

Jealous. I grew up fishing for those crappie with my Grandpa.’There and Blue lake. First item on the bucket list after retirement in December is getting back there this time of year. You two can show me the ropes all over again. Nice day you two had.

Man if those don't just look awesome. Those 2 darker ones should be mine :)

Brad all you have to do is give me some dates and we can get you out there and to Pueblo for some eyes.

Jerry, looking forward to it. I just happen to know a guy who has a spare room for you to stay in.

Jim, looks delicious!

You have to love fish that swim in hot oil after a hard day on the water, nice going AWB.

Jerry - that would be great fun!

Scott - anytime sir.. I would save some fish for you

Russ - what the heck? You ain't never had no open room for me!!! 😊

Bill - thank you

Scotty - The Boss really loves Yellow perch, crappie and walleye, so if I catch those.. they have a high mortality rate. On the other hand, you are correct I am primarily a CnR, CpR kinda guy. Especially on trophy sized fish.
